The Bethesda Foundation hosted one of the world’s most accomplished deep-sea explorers, Dr. Robert Ballard, at its 10th annual Bethesda LYCEUM on May 5, 2011. Ballard entertained the crowd through his thought provoking speech and recollection of his historic underwater discoveries. The event raised more than $100,000 in direct support to expand the Bethesda North Hospital Cancer Care and Ambulatory Treatment Center. The expansion will focus on renovating patient treatment rooms to better accommodate the needs of each patient and their family while receiving the advance cancer care and treatments.
“It wasn’t just a talk,” event chairperson Marian Barrett Leibold said. “The things he said really stayed with people, everyone was captivated.”
Ballard is most famous for his underwater discovery of the sunken R.M.S. Titanic. He has been involved in more than 125 expeditions and is a formal naval officer. Ballard spoke of his passion for exploration, while emphasizing the importance of educating the sciences to our nation’s youth.
The Bethesda LYCEUM is an annual speaking series presented by the Bethesda Foundation. Former speakers for the series include former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Jim Lovell, broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw, former Secretary of State Colin Powell and former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani.
Since 2002, the Bethesda LYCEUM has raised money for services at Bethesda North Hospital such as the Mary Jo Cropper Family Center for Breast Care, Trauma Services, Cardiac Services and the Harold and Margret Thomas Special Care Nursery.
